How To Boost Your Productivity At Your Desk

Do you spend a lot of time at your desk? Is your desk covered in paper and files? Whether you are a home based business or work in a corporate office, many of us spend time working at our desks. If you want to boost your productivity consider implementing some of these desk management strategies today. The paperless desk. Remove all paperwork from your desk: establish files for your projects; reference folders for information you need to access regularly; a reading file for articles, reports, journals and FYI documents; and a daily-file for administrative, miscellaneous and day-specific tasks, and keep these on shelves or in drawers.
The only thing on your desk at any point in time should be information relating to the task or project you are currently working on. Before you move on to the next task or project, file your paperwork and ensure you only have items relating to the new task on your desk. Out of sight, out of mind. Remove your in-tray from your desk or get rid of it all together if you can! Keep it out of sight so the contents don’t distract you and so that people don’t drop new items into it without you noticing. Having an overflowing in-tray in front of you can make you feel guilty and tempt you to get distracted from the task at hand. Educate your colleagues to leave documents for you on your desk, where you will see and either action or file them as they arrive, rather than having them get lost in your in-tray.
Stationery drawer. Keep stationary in cupboards or drawers rather than on your desk. Get rid of all the clutter and keep your desk clear for essential items relating to the current piece of work you are doing. Set up a comfort zone. Take the time to set up your PC, monitor, phone, chair and other vital tools properly. Make sure they are within easy reach and positioned for comfortable use.  Inspire yourself.
Surround yourself with positive images. Keep a photo or phrase that motivates you in view to remind you of, and motivate you toward continually striving for your goals: it could be a holiday destination you want to visit, a photo of your family or a quote that inspires you. Shut down. Take ten minutes to clear your desk at the end of every day: wash your coffee cup, empty your water bottle, put away pens and note pads, file documents and lock away confidential information. Leave each day with a clear desk and start each new day afresh.

The Global Positioning System, How Does It Work?

GPS Phone / The Global Positioning System  is a satellite-based navigation system put into place by the U.S. Department of Defense and is a network made up of 24 satellites in orbit around the earth. The satellites orbit the earth at about 12,000 miles, are solar powered, they transmit a signal of only 50 watts, and travel at speeds of about 7000 miles per hour.

The GPS system was originally intended for military use only, but during the 1980s the government decided to allow civilian use. The satellites make a complete orbit around the earth every 24 hours, and are spaced equal distances from each other. Now that we have covered most of the equipment information, let’s talk about what a GPS can do, and why we have such technology. The GPS system allows for satellite tracking of just about anything to which you can attach a tracker. The GPS system is accurate to within about 15 meters from anywhere on earth. This is some amazing technology, yet it is still relatively new to the average consumer.

The trick in the operation of this system is the tracking of the signal, with formulas thrown in to account for the delay in the transmission of the signal, and atmospheric changes. Since there are other satellites available to provide a sort of numbers game for the GPS, a pretty definite location can be determined using the GPS. What other pieces of information can be gleaned from the use of the GPS? Other pieces of information like speed, bearing, track, trip distance, distance to destination, sunrise and sunset.

That’s a pretty amazing piece of work, how did this GPS come to be in existence? The Department of Defense originally commissioned the work for a military purpose only. But during the 1980s it was decided that the consumer and commercial industry would benefit greatly, and there was little or no security issues for the military.

The military and civilians alike use two low frequency channels for signal communication. The civilian GPS transmits on L1 at a frequency of 1575 MHz. Most of the signal travel by sight, but will not transmit through solid buildings or structures. In order to relate this to something the average consumer will understand and appreciate, OnStar, the communication system that now comes in many of the automobiles we buy, utilizes technology like this in order to determine your location in emergency situations.

We don’t often stop to think about the GPS system and the benefits provided to us, until our car won’t start and we push the OnStar button... and this nice voice says, “This is OnStar, how can we help you?”

Watch Freeview on Your Mobile Phone

Mobile Phone companies have been trying to get Television into phones for a while now but they have never come to much in the UK. This may be due to a lack of interest from the general public who don’t seem very impressed with the idea.
This said, LG’s new HB620T enables you to watch TV on it and does seem to be grabbing more attention. A reason for this phone gaining more interest than previous mobile TV attempts may be due to the DVB-T digital tuner that it has. Instead of the usual DVB-H tuner, this phone has the same tuner that you would find attached to your television set at home, meaning that with this phone, there are things you can watch on channels besides the usual, limited choice offered by previous mobile phones with TV.
The screen is of course still very small but this is acceptable as it is a mobile phone and if the screen was made any bigger, the phone would be considered too bulky to be desirable. Therefore, the 2 inch widescreen display that this phone sports is good enough. Most mobile phones don’t include such a list of features as this one and it can also support HSDPA downloads and manages to squeeze in Bluetooth and a 2-megapixel camera. It is not known if there will be any mobile phone deals on this phone when it comes out as there is still no price for the UK yet or even a definite release date, but it should be out in the near future.

Other mobile phones that offer TV have usually got a limited choice of channels that you can watch whereas on this one you can watch freeview.

Most mobile phones don’t include such a long list of features as this one does.

It is not known if there will be any mobile phone deals on this phone when it comes out.

GPS Integrated Mobile Phones

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a technology that is used to track down people and things. When they are used in mobile phones it provides a service that can be highly effective in the event of an emergency. Some brands of mobile phones have integrated this technology in their products.

Phones like the Nokia 6110 Navigator, several models of Blackberry and the Nokia N95 all have this technology on board their phones.Currently, GPS functionality is only available in sophisticated and highly priced mobile handsets. But, because the demand for GP-integrated mobile phones keep increasing, more affordable, smarter and appealing GPS mobiles will be in the market soon. The majority of mobile phone manufacturers are investing heavy amounts to improve on GPS technology.Currently, navigation is the main use of GPS, but that's not what's interesting the investors.

While people who refuse to use paper-based maps rely on GPS for accurately pinpointing locations, the ultimate use of GPS technology will be using it to deliver location-specific services. The software used with the GPS satellite links will be able to show a particular person's exact location, allowing emergency services, businesses and other individuals to track down the person, whenever needed. The ultimate use of GPS technology seems to be a privacy violation, but the real objective is to make it safer for the public and improve on different services for their benefit.

Each country has specific regulations to limit GPS utilisation and the restrictions include the inability to monitor anyone without their expressed permission.High-rise buildings and developmental areas are still a hindrance to GPS tracking systems and the improved technology aims to remove such barriers too. The existing GPS devices are able to locate landmarks, major roads and popular places, according to the user's current locale. Mobile phones with GPS-integration are capable of gathering and presenting relevant information according to the present location.Another use for GPS technology is network integration. People with mobile phones and networking sites will be able to give information back and forth in real time.

MySpace and Facebook have already taken measures to integrate the technology, by introducing the mobile version of their sites. The primary aim in this integration is to allow user generated content to be uploaded efficiently and conveniently from where the user is.While GPS technology is a relatively new and great way to keep track of children, elderly relatives, important commercial arrivals and departures etc, it may become quite an annoying applied science for the general public. This is because, if the technology is used by unscrupulous marketers, they can target location-specific advertisements to each GPS mobile phone user.

Step by step guide to creating a small business technology plan

The first step in creating a technology plan for your small business, or big business, is to understand clearly what you have now. This doesn't mean you need to do a software audit, or hardware inventory. You need to understand the applications you use to run your business, and the current flow of information throughout the buisiness and to and from customers and suppliers.
The next step is to decide where you want to go. What do you want to get from your network. Would it be best to focus on improving productivity? Then you’ll perhaps automate your order entry process. Does it make more sense to add sales? Then add or fine tune your sales force automation software.
Now compare your assessment from the first step with the results from the second step and peform a simple gap analysis. What do we want and what do we have? As part of the anaylsis you should take in to account any small business technology trends that may be beneficial to your business.
Before putting your plan to paper review our small business networks guidelines article. It's a series of small articles describing what your technology should look like and which areas you should devote your money and personal resources too.
Now for the most important part! Create a strategy to complement your technology plan. We've run across so many small businesses that create a very nice technology plan but they have no strategy for putting it in to place. The strategic plan is simply a list of the milestones in your technology plan, and a path to reach them.
If the first part of your technology planning is to upgrade your servers the corresponding piece of the strategic plan should look something like this:.
Upgrade the main file server:
Purchase a Dell Server #000145 at $2300 by August
Purchase an upgrade of the Windows server software
Upgrade the tape drive and backup software
Perform the upgrade by September 15th.
Re-deploy the existing server as a test server for the IT department.
Test the upgrade and move on to step 2, the accounting workstation upgrades
Nothing overly complicated but it allows you to track your progress. Think of the technology plan as where do you want to go? The strategic plan is, How are we going to get there? .
The first step in creating a technology plan for your small business, or big business, is to understand clearly what you have now. The next step is to decide where you want to go.
